Since 2007, I have also acted as a laboratory genetic counselor for the University of Chicago Genetic Services Laboratory. This has included assisting physicians, genetic counselors and referral laboratories inquiring about testing in our laboratory, performing initial reviews of incoming samples, writing reports, attending national genetics conferences (NSGC, ASHG, ACMG) and general laboratory support.
I am also involved in higher-level operations of the Clinical Molecular Diagnostic laboratory that include team efforts to develop and implement new tests and develop appropriate infrastructure to enable the implementation of new technologies; work with laboratory directors to determine appropriate new tests for development and keep abreast of new genetic literature; participate in various research activities and participate in the training of clinical laboratory fellows; supervise junior genetic counselors and work-study students.
