Dr. Topper earned his PhD in Genetics from the University of Wisconsin where his work focused on functional genomics and yeast systems biology. Shortly after graduation he joined the American Board of Medical Genetics training program at the University of Chicago, and worked on developing protocols and informatics infrastructure for the rapid and responsible implementation of clinical next-generation sequencing. His interests currently lie in developing next-generation sequencing assays for the diagnosis of rare neurological diseases, and developing relationships with clinicians and scientists to develop knowledge networks necessary for comprehensive testing and accurate interpretation. Recognizing that the field is in a dynamic state of flux, he is also very interested in gene discovery projects for patients with neurological phenotypes of no known genetic etiology.
